It took me a couple of beers to realise...

That being the white photographer at the ball for the Afro-Caribbean Society was going to require a slightly different tactic. This tactic ended up being to ignore a lack of self confidence and dance as well as I could while waving a DSLR around and blinding myself constantly with the flash.

Apparently this ' party photography ' is becoming increasingly popular in LA and places like that. Seems a reasonable excuse to mix drinking and photgraphy in ways that doesn't involve dangerous darkroom chemicals.

It took a couple of pints for me to start getting shots I was anywhere near happy with, but I got there in the end. So did my wallet - this ball was at the Hilton.

I'm glad you had a good experience at the ball :) The shot is great, the expressions really make it.

It sort of sucked at first, then became good as I loosened up a bit. They didn't stand a chance once I bust out the super-white man dance :D
